Who will ultimately dominate Sunni Islam in the Middle East and how effective will Shia Muslims and others be in preventing the unification of the Sunni Arab World? These questions will take decades of violent conflict to resolve, argues the author of this report. To shed light on the battle, the author focuses on 1) the potential leaders of the Sunni world and their adversaries; 2) the different theaters where the struggles for hegemony will take place; 3) the ‘tools of power’ the competing players will have available; and 4) other key demographic, economic and environmental factors that could influence events.
