How should Australia respond to the disputes in the South China Sea? While answering this question, this paper examines 1) Canberra’s approach towards the region since the mid-20th century, to include its interests; 2) how the Australian public perceives the disputes in the area; and 3) how the government’s defense spending plans, alliances and partnerships will shape its future behavior in the region. Given that the South China Sea disputes will continue to be a ‘determining factor’ in Australia’s foreign and economic policies, the text’s author concludes that the country should develop a grand strategy that clearly outlines its interests in the region.
