This paper contends that Europe’s turbulent security environment and Donald Trump’s strong rhetoric have revived an interest in NATO, to include the roles it should play and the future of the US’ relationship with its allies. To capitalize on the moment, the Alliance’s stakeholders need to 1) remind themselves of NATO’s enduring relevance; 2) address the Alliance’s long-simmering burden-sharing issue fairly and honestly; 3) reaffirm US commitments to European security, particularly in relation to Russia; 4) contemplate how NATO can increase its role in the Middle East; and 5) accomplish internal reforms.
