The featured article in this issue of “Perspectives on Terrorism” analyzes the relationship between ‘core al Qaeda’ and other established groups in the global jihadist movement. The subsequent articles focus on 1) how right-wing extremist groups react when individuals defect from their ranks; 2) how states that provide ‘religious security’ for their citizens undercut the ideological narratives disseminated by religious militants; 3) how and why Theodore Kaczynski’s Unabomber Manifesto has resonated with radical environmentalists; 4) how religious converts in the US and UK compared with non-converts when it comes to engaging in terrorist activities; 5) how one might assess terrorist practices by studying the cultural, ritual and community practices of extremist groups; and 6) what IS defectors have to say about why they joined the group, what they saw while they were in it, and why they eventually left.
