This article contends that recently discovered oil reserves in the Golan Heights, along the Syria-Israel border, might be spurring China to become increasingly active as a peacekeeping force in the region. Indeed, the author highlights that in its efforts to ensure its access to Middle-East energy sources and to support its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China 1) is stepping up its activities to help resolve the war in Syria; 2) has offered to act as a mediator in the Israel-Palestinian conflict; and 3) may provide peacekeeping troops to the Golan’s UN Disengagement Observer Force in the future.
