This publication examines South Korea’s move to help bring about a new regional order that not only embraces North Korea, but also reduces the role of the US. Key insights include that 1) South Korean President Moon Jae-In is convinced that Kim Jong-Un shares his vision for inter-Korean rapprochement; 2) Beijing and Moscow have urged Seoul and Pyongyang to ignore the current impasse with Washington over denuclearization, and focus instead on the dramatic breakout in the form of inter-Korean transportation and energy projects as well as their integration into the Eurasian Belt and Road Initiative (BRI); 3) it remains to be seen how willing Washington will be to accept its marginalization, and more.
