This commentary probes the geopolitical implications of the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, which may permit China to 1) bolster its dominant position in the global renewables industry, and 2) expand its role as a leader in climate policymaking. In the last case, it’s too bad that Beijing’s energy-climate policies, including those tied to coal, are much more ambivalent than people suspect.
