This publication discusses the implications of Washington’s use of the phrase “Indo-Pacific” as opposed to “Asia-Pacific” for the region’s major players. The text’s author contends that this indicates a new view of the region and particularly reflects the growing importance of India and the Indian Ocean region. As the region’s littoral countries have a growing fear of being dependent upon China, they seem to be in favor of the new concept. This is because though it is no more than a concept at the moment, the name shows a shift in economic as well as political focus from the Far East (Japan) to China and now to India.
