This paper explores the status of natural gas interconnection projects in Central and Southeastern Europe. More specifically, the text’s author 1) describes seven gas infrastructure projects in Central Europe whose completion is critical to making a single European energy market a reality; 2) takes stock of the progress that’s been made to end the “energy island” status of the Baltic States; and 3) explains why gas interconnectedness will not occur unless corruption and Gazprom's control of the gas market are addressed in depth.
