This publication reflects on the tensions in US-Sino relations. Key insights include 1) that Beijing is convinced that Washington’s hardline approach to trade and security issues is aimed at escalating the face-off between the two countries; 2) in his commemorative speech of the 40th anniversary of China’s historic “reform and opening up” policy, President Xi Jinping heralded the last phase of the century-long marathon for China to become the global hegemon; 3) the struggle for China’s ascent will become more vigorous, even if this entails an escalation in the confrontation with the US and greater hardships for the people of China; and more.
