This issue of “Perspectives on Terrorism” begins with an analysis of the history, ideology and tactics of radical Islamist groups that subscribe to the al Muhajiroun-style of activism, which is prominent in Western Europe. The subsequent articles explore 1) the behavioral problems and disorders found in budding jihadists in the Netherlands; 2) the risks of using terms such as ‘jihadism’ while analyzing the ideological foundations of terrorism; 3) how terrorism has been depicted in films since the 1970s and how the representations have subsequently affected cultural discourses on the phenomenon; 4) the evolving role of NATO in confronting terrorism and violent extremism; and 5) how al Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State compete for both territory and the hearts and minds of jihadists worldwide.
