Developing security

Technology is a central aspect of contemporary security politics and practices. It speeds up, it facilitates, it automates, and it might soon be able to operate in a fully autonomous fashion. In short: technology does things that humans simply cannot do, and thereby has the potential to change the ways in which we “do” security.

And yet, the development of such technologies often remains inaccessible. This research project investigates the many influences and decisions that shape security technologies. Which stakeholders and interests are involved from an idea to eventual large-scale government procurement plans? What is the role of technical options and constraints, business decisions, and market forces?
