Violence reduction in urban contexts

In several mid-income countries, especially in Latin America and Southern Africa, levels of criminal violence are staggering. This violence is often concentrated in what analysts have called “fragile cities” and mainly involves young men from marginalized neighborhoods. In this research project, we aim to understand and evaluate solutions for the problem of urban violence. One such solution has been identified in historical processes of institutionalized policy change, as the one experienced in Bogotá, which has led to a sustained decline in homicidal violence. Also, the research project focuses on current policy initiatives in order to assess their potential for future violence reduction.
