This brief assesses the strategic importance of newly-discovered gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly for European energy security. When it actually comes to exporting the gas, two possible options standout – 1) build a pipeline that connects Israel and Cyprus to Southern Europe, or 2) create a network of pipelines into Egypt, from which gas could be liquefied and exported. In either case, the brief’s author concludes, the EU will need to fortify its energy diplomacy, particularly with Cairo.
