The featured article in this issue of the Sentinel speculates on whether the so-called Islamic State (IS) will be able to regenerate itself in Eastern Iraq’s Diyala Province, if and when the group is driven out of Mosul. The Sentinel’s other articles focus on 1) the difficulties Iraqi forces faced in liberating Fallujah earlier this year and how they contrast with the ones they will experience while trying to secure Mosul; 2) an updated explanation on why al-Qa`ida supported Abu Musab al-Zarqawi before 9/11; and 3) the lessons the US has learned from its global counterterrorism campaign over the last 15 years. The text then closes with an interview with Lieutenant General Charles Cleveland, USA(R), on the future of US Special Operations Forces.
