This briefing examines the nexus of security and human rights in Colombia. The authors examine the current security environment in Colombia, while linking efforts to improve security to widespread human rights abuses in the country. The authors argue that to move toward lasting peace, the Colombian government must not only maintain its security achievements, but also improve its security policy by addressing serious human rights issues and expanding the rule of law and national reach of the state's civilian institutions. The authors provide a list of key recommendations for the Colombian government and civil society actors to work towards these goals.
