This paper discusses natural security challenges for the US in the 21st century. The author defines the concept of natural security and explores two broad categories of consideration: consumption of natural resources, especially energy, non-fuel minerals, water and land; how these can affect geopolitics and the stability of nations; and consequences of high consumption rates of these resources, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, resulting in geostrategic pressure, instability and disasters.
