This paper focuses on labor migration to and from the five Central Asian states and Russia. It describes the major trends that emerged in the 2000s as well as the difficulties faced by migrants in finding jobs, acquiring necessary work permits and regarding working conditions. The author examines Central Asian governments' efforts to protect their citizens against slavery and human trafficking by endorsing pertinent legislation and strengthening law-enforcement structures. The paper concludes with predictions about how the global economic downturn will impact labor migration during 2009-2010.
