This briefing examines the stance of political parties in Afghanistan a couple months before the September 2005 parliamentary elections. The paper examines those parties likely to contest the elections. The authors argue that healthy, well-organized political parties are key to democratization in Afghanistan. For democracy to take hold, electoral law needs to be reformed and the political opposition be considered legitimate by the governing authorities.
