This report discusses the need for political reform and democratization in Guinea to ensure that the already precarious security situation does not worsen. The authors recommend a number of steps to avoid another crisis in West Africa. Besides having its own political problems and instances of political violence, the country is strongly affected by a number of civil wars in the region, particularly in Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, and Sierra Leone. Guinea is involved in these regional conflicts through cross-border trading in arms and supporting combatants.
