This report argues that the US must undertake a number of initiatives to ensure that the National Guard and Reserves remain an indispensable force capable of defending the American homeland and protecting US security interests around the world. The authors argue that although policymakers have taken great strides in recent years to support the Guard and Reserves, the US government still is not investing sufficiently in the policies, laws, and budgets required for the Guard and Reserves to fulfill their current and future role in US national security.
