Somalia remains the quintessential "failed state", without an effective national government for more than twenty years. The latest version of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), established with much fanfare in January 2009, remains weak, confined to part of Mogadishu, riven by political squabbles and dependent for its survival on the troops of the African Union mission (AMISOM).
