This briefing examines relations between China and Taiwan, who find themselves in a state of détente after drifting towards conflicty for much of 2004. The briefing also examines the past and future US role in helping to restore regional stability. After giving a round-up of what the two parties want, the briefing presents the key drivers and brakes on Taiwanese efforts to achieve independence. The authors assume that cross-strait tensions can restrained and military conflict avoided through the end of Taiwanese President Chen's term in 2008.
