This swisspeace working paper analyzes the social, economic, and political situation in Kosovo in 2005. The paper also provides an outlook on the future development of Kosovo and describes how particularly economic challenges, such as high unemployment rates will contribute to significant difficulties in achieving long-term stability and ethnic peace in the province. The author states that in light of the continuation of expected social, economic, and political difficulties in Kosovo, the presence of the international community in Kosovo remains essential and indispensable.
