This background paper is intended to assist policy-makers and practitioners to better understand the relevance of armed violence prevention and reduction to their daily work. The authors show how violence undermines development programs and argue that armed violence prevention and reduction is fundamentally a development issue. The paper further highlights the efforts of an important multilateral initiative designed to help reduce the global burden of armed violence around the world.
