This paper examines the technology of marking small arms and its role in preventing illicit arms proliferation. The marking of small arms is a necessary component of record-keeping system, which is crucial for tracing small arms and investigating illicit trade. In order to support states in choosing the most effective solution for their specific marking needs, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of different marking technologies and methods, comparing their main characteristics.
