This Issue Brief focuses on tracing methods as it relates to the tracing of cartridge-based ammunition marking. The goal is to provide both a practical insight into the marking process and a review of some current regulations. After the introduction, the article provides the necessary background to understand current marking practices, illustrates some key definitions, explores the global trends in ammunition marking, and provides an overview of current regional approaches. The third section focuses on the practical aspects of ammunition marking. Finally, the authors discusses two recent technologies and describes how they could help overcome some of the limitations imposed by current practices.
