This study focuses on the intersection of language and state authority in the context of propaganda and identity politics in China. It discusses state discourse in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the elite cadres that function as its primary 'carriers.' The authors conclude that the PRC now promotes open debate on issues that were previously off the table and supports inquiry into familiar problems from perspectives that were once taboo.
