This briefing records the key achievements in the Aceh peace process one year after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated Aceh and reordered the political landscape. It also lists some of the remaining obstacles in the road to a lasting peace between the Indonesian government and the guerrillas of the Free Aceh Movement (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka, GAM). The reintegration of GAM combatants and the drafting of a bill on an Acehese government are among the most serious challenges in the peace process.
