8 Dec 2005

This report discusses the 18 December 2005 presidential and parliamentary elections in Bolivia. The authors argue that while the elections are an opportunity to begin tackling deep social, ethnic, and economic issues, they are also likely to bring their own problems, including social unrest in the first months of the new government. The author's argue that a heavy responsibility lies on both domestic and international actors if stability in the country is to be maintained. These actors need to brace for the election results and the social fallout that may follow. That means casting aside individual interests and focusing on supporting the new government.
