This report examines the shifting power relationships that have contributed to the rise in nationalism in North East Asia. This process is aggravating old disputes over territory and history and threatening to make progress on critical security and economic challenges more difficult. The authors examine the territorial and historic disputes more closely, and suggest that China, Japan, and South Korea turn to cooperation and confidence building measures to reduce tensions.
