This briefing assesses the state of affairs in Liberia after the successful election process in January 2006. It evaluates the election process, the completion of which is considered a first major step towards sustainable peace. The authors identify three further major peacebuilding challenges as main tasks to be addressed in 2006, namely the ongoing economic governance and security sector reform and judicial reform. They argue that the success of these initiatives also depends on the participation and responsibilities of the main donors, the US, the Bretton Woods Institutions, and the European Commission. The briefing concludes by discussing the impact of developments in Liberia on the West African region.
