This brief examines the laws governing the use of force by police in India, the situations in which force is used, the cultural factors that affect policing, lethal violence, and the prospects for effective reform. The misuse of force by the police casts a dark shadow over India’s police establishment. The police have a reputation for brutality and extortion, and citizen distrust of them is widespread.
