This paper discusses how federal budget issues affect US national defense and focuses on the prospect of sequestration – the large automatic cuts that are scheduled to take place at the end of the year. The authors argue that the fate of sequestration will be inextricably linked to the fate of the larger end-of-the-year tax and spending changes known as the "fiscal cliff". Therefore, they examine the political dynamics surrounding these other issues in order to assess the likelihood that sequestration cuts will be averted.
