This paper addresses gender-based physical violence (GBPV) in Nairobi and focuses specifically on three types of violence (physical violence, rape or sexual violence and lethal violence). The paper takes stock of the situation as of 2012—two years after the introduction of Kenya's new constitution with a markedly progressive bill of rights and six years after the introduction of the Sexual Offences Act—highlighting multiple knowledge gaps in the process. It aims also to offer policy-relevant guidance designed to enhance the disjointed 'system' that is currently in place to respond to GBPV.
