This document constitutes the first part of the Indian Army Doctrine of 2004. It outlines a framework for a better understanding of the country's approach to warfare and provides the foundation for its practical application. After taking into account the geo-strategic environment, the doctrine provides insights into the resulting consequences for the Indian army. It then presents a short treatise on the understanding of war and provides the operational perspectives for the Indian army concerning elements for success, surprise and deception and the impact of technology and the revolution in military affairs.
