This brief compiles unclassified information from the NATO Support Agency's (NASPA) conference on Mobile Equipment for Ammunition Demilitarization (MEAD). The brief concludes that a significant number of mobile plants advertised on the demilitarization market are still prototypes undergoing development and have not achieved a proven track record in the field. However the rising costs of transporting ammunition have revived NATO's interest in MEADs. The brief argues that user communities need to be aware of the capabilities and limitations of mobile systems and should consider currently existing commercial ammunition disposal systems in their ammunition demilitarization programs.
