This briefing paper argues that the threat of Islamic terrorism in Bosnia has been exaggerated. Acts of violence in recent years by Bosniaks are not a symptom of Islam’s rise in the Balkans but a reflection of stress and fragmentation of traditional Islamic society and the ongoing morass that is Bosnian politics. However, the fact that the Islamic community has become more politicized and partisan increases the risk of escalation.
