Italy has been increasingly active in international military missions since the end of World War II. Parliament has only intervened or been active in 30 out of the 124 deployments between 1945 and 2010, and even parliament's focus has been on funds rather than the purpose of the mission. The authors argue that this negatively affects the identification and pursuit of Italian national interests in the deployment of missions abroad. They further argue that parliamentary intervention should always occur prior to deployment and that a general procedure of joint participation between parliament and head of state should occur on all security related matters.
