This research note examines the definition, types, activities and functions of armed violence monitoring systems (AVMSs). It also identifies the key and emerging issues that affect the AVMSs. It concludes that the development of national and sub-national capacities to monitor and analyze the distribution of armed violence through AVMSs has demonstrated their ability to make important contributions to armed violence reduction and prevention efforts.
