This briefing examines the peace agreement signed between the Myanmar government and the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO). More specifically, it argues that a long-lasting peace in Kachin state will depend on multiple factors -- repositioning troops, establishing effective monitoring mechanisms, developing an equitable peace economy, and promoting broad multiparty political dialogue among all the groups involved in the conflict.
