This paper talks about the Syrian civil war two years into the conflict. The paper examines the options faced by Assad, the opposition and the international community, and where their decisions might lead. It focuses on ways to deescalate the conflict and bring about a diplomatic settlement, but also suggests that the development of the conflict has made the possibility of a negotiated solution more difficult. It also argues that the way the war is going, it will probably draw in other regional and international actors and lead to a larger crisis.
