This report focuses on the ongoing conflicts in eastern Congo. In particular, it looks at the politically-based violence occurring on the Ruzizi Plain, where the Bafuliro and Barundi tribes have claimed land and leadership rights since colonial times. The report concludes that despites the best efforts of others, peace mediation efforts in the region cannot be externally driven. Local conflicts need bottom-up resolution strategies that focus on effective intercommunal relations.
