This commentary discusses the challenges of addressing internet governance and the debates over the issue between authoritarian and liberal-democratic countries. The author focuses on the 2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) and described how democratic countries favor openness and authoritarian states prioritize security. The author concludes by outlining possibilities for internet governance for democracies, highlighting the possibility of a multi-stakeholder approach.
