This brief addresses America's future role in NATO in the face of shrinking defense budgets on both sides of the Atlantic. The author argues that the level of focus and resources that the US devotes to the alliance will depend on US defense spending levels and perceptions of the country's pivot to Asia. He concludes by recommending ways to improve NATO capabilities and to maintain support for the alliance among US policymakers and the public.
