This paper discusses developments in women’s legal status in Afghanistan and gives recommendations on how the newly gained rights following the US-led intervention can be sustained and protected. The authors argue that despite considerable progress, persistent insecurity and violence threaten women’s political, economic and social rights. Moreover, the authors show how the legislature is already taking steps that undermine Afghanistan’s domestic and international commitments to gender equality and hinder progress in this area.
