This paper examines Kyrgyzstan's sociopolitical structure and looks at why the country has not become more democratic since its independence in 1991. Kyrgyzstan, the author explains, has a rigid vertical power structure based on the unity of command with traditional and patriarchal foundations guiding its social and political relations. To allow further development and self-government by the Kyrgyz people, this issue will need to be addressed and resolved.
