This paper examines Germany's perception of and approach to the euro crisis and the way these have affected political union, financial policy, and integration in the EU. She suggests that for two years following the crisis, Germany was at the helm Europe's future but very reluctant to engage in bold steps to ensure the rescue of the euro. However, she claims that since then, the debate over Europe in Germany has changed and may allow the country's government to play an active role in shaping the future of the euro and the EU.
