This paper uses case studies from Italy, Turkey and Morocco to examine the relationship between natural resource management practices and socioeconomic development. It first presents a definition of natural resources and reviews the relevant literature on natural resource governance. It then looks at how natural resources influence social and economic development and reviews how different countries manage their natural resource wealth. Finally, it develops a series of indicators aimed at assessing the dimensions of the management and use of natural resources.
