This brief argues that the US needs to develop an ocean mapping system for the waters off its coastlines. Given the increased ‘diversity and volume of offshore activity’ near the coasts, an in-place geospatial system would help balance the American military’s offshore training and preparedness needs with those of conservation groups and the private sector.
